Flame Wings of Caledor vs. Shoto Samurais - Week 5

Week 5 is upon the Flame Wings of Caledor and this week they face the Shoto Samurais. Finally, they get to face a team of sensible beings in this human team. Prior to this game, the opponents have all been freaks and beasts. The Shoto Samurais are down an Ogre due to an injury, but it looks like they’ve hired the star player, Helmut Wulf, in order to fill the position.

Flame Wings win the toss and choose to receive the opening kick. Jho the Scubber is back from his injury and on the line of scrimmage. Yodlam Elran, the recently hired thrower takes the field for the first time and stays back to receive the ball.

Smet Torwat and Jho the Scrubber are marking the same player after the kick off and Smet jumps to action to by throwing a block at Date Masamune before Jho can screw it up. As Masamune goes down, Smet looks at Jho with disdain and let’s him know that he doesn’t belong here, loud enough that some of the crowd in the stands heard it.

Soi ‘Sparrow’ Dang blocks a journeyman who hits the ground hard and is taken off the field due to knock out. The elf catchers are running up both sides preparing for the possibility of taking either path if the opportunity arises, but the Flame Wings may have spread out too much as there is little defense in the middle. Elran hangs back a bit due to the lack of cover.

Minamoto Musashi blitzes Kitro Kreshin, one of the linemen trying to block the path to the thrower in the backfield, and drops him to the ground stunning him. After the block he sprints with everything he had to mark the thrower Elran. The remaining Shoto Samurais spread out to hinder any progress of the catchers should Elran get free.

‘Sparrow’ runs back from the line of scrimmage to blitz Musashi off the thrower. Elran takes the opening to run across the line of scrimmage and make a short pass to Ruhntinimas, who runs the ball forward and to the middle of the field. Three other Flame Wings dodge their way to help protect Ruhntinimas in an improvised 3-man cage.

The Shoto Samurais focus on how to stop the ball and potentially take it. There manage to get two humans marking the ball carrier and three more close by. Not content with this set up, Fujibayasi Nagato runs up to Irato Daktirin, who was one of the three elves forming the cage who had been knocked down, and drops a fist into his gut while he’s prone on the pitch. No further damage is done to Daktirin, but the Flame Wings’ coaches hopes of a civilized opponent has been stamped out. He should have known when they hired a player who brought a chainsaw, but Helmut Wulf was still on the sidelines.

The Flame Wings assess the situation and look for a way to free the ball carrier. A plan is divised to push the humans clustered around the thrower, hoping to clear two marks with one block. Unfortunately, the plan fails with the block resulting in a weak push on the block target and the next human standing firm. A bumbling misstep. Out of frustration, Smet Torwat throws a block at Date Masamune, the human that wouldn’t budge, and drops him to the pitch. That’s one mark removed from the ball carrier. With the area as crowded as it is, there is little chance of clearing the other mark immediately. Nyt Hona tries to take down another of the Samurai, but in the end, they both fall to the ground. Turnover.

Oda Nobunaga throws a block at Ruhntinimas who is knocked to the ground and stunned while the ball comes loose on the 12 yard line. It falls where it is marked by two humans, two elves, and has two prone elves within reach as well.

The area around the ball is a mess of elves and humans looking for any small advantage or chance. Kitro Kreshin makes a block on Momochi Sandayu resulting in a knock out taking one more human to the sidelines. The elves' effort leaves three players from each team marking the ball and the prone Ruhntinimas within arm’s reach of it.

The Shoto Samurais manage to get all the Flame WIngs off the ball, but fail to pick it up and the ball scatters to the outside of the crowd of elves and men.

Smet Torwat sees a play to push two Samurais off the ball. This time no player stops the progress of the plan. With no opposition, Yodlam Elran runs for the ball grabs it and makes a quick pass to Emsi ‘the Guardian’ who runs it into the end zone. 1-0 Flame Wings.

The next drive starts with one of the Shoto Samurais still knocked out on the sideline and forces Helmut Wulf into play. The teams each have 11 players on the field and it’s the Samurais’ turn 5. Yodlam Elran kicks a high kick and Nasu no Yoichi is under it to receive, but fails to pull it in and it falls in front of him.

On the line of scrimmage, Kitro Kreshin takes a block and manages to only be pushed back. But that hit is followed up by another which results in Kreshin hitting the ground hard. He’ll be waiting to wake up on the sidelines for now. Rupert throws a block at Jho the Scrubber which results in both players going down, but Jho gets knocked out and is dragged to the sideline. Turnover.

The Flame Wings look for a way to take advantage of the early turnover. With only three turns before half time, the elves play a little risky and try to run most of their players for the ball in the Samurais’ backfield. The center isn’t protected well, but progress only need to be stalled for three turns.

The Shoto Samurais moved to protect the ball while Helmut Wulf moves to use the chainsaw on Ruhntinimas who is badly hurt and while no lasting damage is expected he will miss the rest of the game. The ball has been picked up by Nasu no Yoichi and is protected, but with a hole in the defense from behind the ball carrier.

The Flame Wings try to move to hinder progress, but there are not many ways for the humans to score before half time. Zep Norre angered by Helmut’s barbaric attack on Ruhntinimas charges at Matthias, a prone human lineman and knocks him out with a leaping punch. He is then thrown out for the duration of the game. The Flame Wings’ coach looks at the field and sees that there is one player with the possibility to make it to the end zone before half time. Zep Norre was the only line of defense and that elf’s lack of control may cost the team their lead.

Maybe discipline is lacking on the human side as well as Rupert, the only player with a chance to score, moves back to assist with a block. Helmut charges at Trondtje with his chainsaw, but the elf manages to escape harm and stays on his feet. To his surprise, another block is made from behind and Trondjte is knocked out. One more elf on the sideline, that leaves six on the field until half time.

With no chance to score, the Flame Wings knock a lineman to the ground and then run to get out of the reach of Helmut’s chainsaw. Flames Wings retain their 1-0 lead at half time.

The refs finally notice the chainsaw and throw Helmut out of the game. With the knock outs, injuries, and ejected players the balance between teams is skewed into the Shoto Samurais’ favor as half time starts with ten humans opposed by seven elves. With this uphill fight, the Flame Wings’ coach is weighing the options of hoping for the humans to score quickly and trying to return the ball or fight to prevent the score and preserve the lead. He has no real confidence in either. Yodlam Elran makes a deep kick into the backfield as the drive starts.

The Samurais’ throw a couple of blocks on the line of scrimmage and then focus most of their attention on defense of the ball moving most of their players into the backfield. The Flame Wings put up a small fight at the line of scrimmage and spread out to look for opportunities to keep the ball’s forward movement slow.

The humans move the ball to the line of scrimmage while hugging the sideline. The ball is secure in the cage with an extra player in the front. It’s going to be hard for the Flame Wings to break the formation. Soi ‘Sparrow’ Dang puts another human on the ground knocking Rupert out reducing the player advantage. Smet Torwat runs around behind the ball to take down Sasuke Uchiha with a personal strength advantage allowing him to tag the ball carrier. He knows he’ll be out numbered in the counter strike, but he can’t ignore the chance to allow another player to find an opening.

Shoto Samurais move forward 4 yards. Minamoto Musashi blitzes Smet Torwat who sees stars stunned on the ground. Players crowd around making the defense even more difficult to break.

Emsi ‘the Guardian’ blitzes Oda Nobunaga who’s in the front corner position of the cage, allowing him to mark the ball carrier. With the fallen human player, Nyt Hona gets some assistance and blocks Momochi Sandayu allowing a chain pus that gets the ball carrier back behind the line of scrimmage and out the corner of the cage. Soi Dang runs to mark the ball carrier as the push moved him away from Emsi.

Minamoto Musashi is quick to block ‘Sparrow’ and clear him from marking the ball carrier. The block resulted in an injury, but the apothecary was called in and after a bit of work Soi was returned to the sideline able to return in the next drive, should there be one. Flame Wings are outnumbered by three players again.

The Samurais push the outnumbered elves around and move the ball a little further forward. Nasu no Yoichi takes the ball into a cage on the sideline, but stops next to a prone Emsi ‘the Guardian.’ Maybe Nasu thought he was stunned, but Emsi stood up and threw a block at the ball carrier while Nyt Hona helps fight off any interference from the humans on each side of Emsi. Nasu goes down and falls on the sideline scattering the ball to the crowd. The ball is thrown midfield, but still in the Flame Wings’ backfield. The block caught Nasu by surprise and he was left on the ground stunned.

The ball is free from the Samurais, but in order for any elf to get it, they will have to dodge out of the humans’ grasps. Trying to defend a potential ball pick up, Trondjte, assisted by Smet Torwat, makes a block on Date Masamune, knocking him out in the process. Nyt Hona makes the move to go for the ball, and despite his ability to dodge, he is tripped up by the humans. Turnover.

The ball is on the ground with a lone elf marking it. The Flame Wings are spread out in a manner to allow few holes to get to the ball, but being outnumbered, it will be hard to hold the Samurais out.

Minamoto Musashi makes a blitz on Irato Daktirin, the elf marking the ball, and with the determination of Musahi to get the ball, he just plows through Irato who is badly hurt and move to the sidelines. The Samurais continue to move around the ball to keep the hands of elves off of it. Emsi take a block while surrounded by four humans and ends up stunned on the ground a couple yards from the ball carrier he pulled his surprise attack on. Momochi Sandoyu picks up the ball inside a three man cage.

Trondjte eyes the open corner of the cage. It’s a bit of a run to get there, but the elf knows he’s stronger than the catcher. The catcher goes down, but the ball scatters to the blitzer Oda Nobunaga who pulls the ball in to keep it from the Flame Wings. The remaining Flame Wings swarm the blitzer carrying the ball to look for the chance to get it away from him as he is just outside of scoring range.

Minamoto Musashi makes a block on Smet Torwat clearing one elf off the ball carrier. Oda Nobunaga makes a blitz on Trondjte while carrying the ball. Trondjte sidesteps the push to stay between Nobunaga and the goal line. Nobunaga tries to run passed Trondjte anyway. I don’t know if it was adrenaline or a miscommunication, but in the end, Nobunaga fell to the ground tripped up by the elf blitzer and dropped the ball. Turnover. The ball falls behind the three elves that remain standing on the field.

Nyt Hona, one of the Flame Wings shining players, grabs the ball and runs towards the Samurais’ goal line. Smet Torwat gets to his feet. He’s surrounded by humans, but damn if he’s not going to do his best to keep them there and occupied. Emsi ‘the Guardian’ has shaken the cobwebs out and gets up to help block the path to Nyt Hona and the ball. Trondjte dodges away to be closer to the ball and prevent any strength advantages on a block on the ball carrier. Yodlam Elran runs making two dodges to put himself between the humans and the ball which is 4 yards from the line of scrimmage. It will be a run, but Nyt Hona has the speed to score as turn 15 starts for the Shoto Samurais.

Smet takes a block and remains on his feet, but pushed back between two humans. Momochi Sandoyu gets up from the ground and makes a dodge while sprinting to mark the ball carrier. Smet gets pushed again, but remains on his feet. Then a third block comes and he could no longer stay upright. Tomotomi Hideyoshi sprints to mark the ball carrier, but trips right in front of Nyt Hona, stunned by the overexertion. Turn over.

Trondtje makes a block on Sandoyu, while he stays on his feet, he is pushed back from the ball carrier. Nyt Hona takes the ball and runs to the 14 yard line. More elves run to help keep the opponents away from the ball carrier who’s in scoring position. Smet Torwat is surrounded by four humans, but he’s just to exhausted to put up a fight and stays on the ground.

Another Samurai stand over Smet, and then another. As Nasu no Yoichi looks at the prone elf, Smet says, “Are you smeggin’ serious!?” as he is punched in the gut on turn 16. Nasu is then thrown out. Turn over.

Nyt Hona finishes his run for the end zone. The game ends 2-0 FLAME WINGS OF CALEDOR!!

MVP’s are Oda Nobunaga for the Shoto Samurais and for the Flame Wings of Caledor it’s…

Jho the Scrubber!? Again?!

---

The Flame Wings’ coach said, “Yodlam Elran had a great start. He was two for two on his passes and put himself in the way to help secure the ball for the last minute touchdown. He was slightly out of position on turn 14 and may have prevented the Shoto Samurai catcher from marking Nyt Hona, but it was his first game with us and we were out numbered the entire second half of the game.”

Smet Torwat shared a few comments too. He said, “Are you smeggin’ kidding me? Jho the Scrubber gets MVP again?! He went down on turn 5 and never came back! I cleared the ball for the first touchdown with a clever push! I put myself on the line multiple times in the second half and the give it to that smeggin’ janitor! Who are the deranged people that keep giving him the MVP!? The coach is neveer going to get rid of him if this keeps up! Please, I beg the remaining opposing teams, take Jho the Scrubber out."
